GPS files (.gpx)

Included with the map download are a number of additional files (with the extension .GPX). Every walking track on each map has a corresponding .GPX file which may be loaded onto a compatible GPS receiver. Once loaded the file will appear as a highly visible colored line in your GPS screen at the appropriate coordinates, which will allow you to easily find and follow the track on the ground.

Note: We recommend the .GPX files be used by experienced GPS users only, and in conjunction with other navigation aids.

Google Earth's KML files

It's always a good idea to preview the terrain you plan to visit, and you can do that in the comfort of your home with Google Earth.

Now this is easier than ever. For each track profile there is also a Google Earth compatible file (with the .kml extension).

Just double click the file (one or many, each with a sequence number which matches that of the corresponding track profile) and Google Earth will open automatically, spin the earth globe until New Zealand appears, and finally zoom in precisely to the track or tracks you selected. That simple.
Try it with this file, the Rabbit Pass track in the Wilkin valley of the South Island. (To view the relevant section of the map of the area, click here, or go to the maps page.)
