Detailed Overview

With more than 17,000Km of walking tracks, New Zealand is one of the most sought after destinations for outdoor enthusiasts from around the world

More than 11,000 walking tracks create a real challenge to people wanting to plan their next trip, and select routes that are within their interest, ability and level of fitness.

This may be of particular importance to occasional trampers who have already "bagged" the more popular walks, as well as experienced hikers in search of adventures off the well-trodden paths.

The New Zealand Track Profiles website has been conceived to assist with the task of planning a tramping trip and evaluating its level of difficulty.
It offers elevation profiles and statistics for all the walking tracks in New Zealand, up to the longest ones such as the World Heritage-listed Routeburn Track in Southland.
The collection of information contained here includes maps, track elevation profiles, some fundamental track statistics and GPS and Google Earth files to help visualise and follow tracks on the ground.

The information in New Zealand Track Profiles has originally been sourced in digital form from official data licenced from LINZ (Land Information New Zeland, the New Zealand Government department responsible for mapping) and subsequently processed using purpose-built as well as open source software, such as the GDAL/OGR, PostGIS, and SAGA GIS projects. The source data for the whole of New Zealand has been subdivided into over 400 map tiles, to match the same terrain area (24 x 36 km) and topographic features as the equivalent new Topo50 paper map series published by LINZ.
